MEC disputes hospitals' debt

THE Gauteng department of health and social development has disputed claims that it owes suppliers and small, medium and micro enterprises about R2,2billion.

It says that the amount is based on outdated information.

Provincial MEC for health Qedani Mahlangu said yesterday that more than R1,4billion of the so-called outstanding debt relate to goods and services which have not been delivered.

Early this week reports claimed that the Gauteng hospitals still owed R2,2billion to suppliers despite the introduction of Operation Bhadala.

Operation Bhadala was launched in June this year by Premier Nomvula Mokonyane. Its aim is to ensure that service providers who have done work from April 1 2008 until June 30 2009 are paid. - Zinhle Mapumulo
