bulls smarting over '95 final

THE Blue Bulls will be out for revenge when they take on the in-form Cheetahs in the Absa Currie Cup final at Loftus on Saturday.

THE Blue Bulls will be out for revenge when they take on the in-form Cheetahs in the Absa Currie Cup final at Loftus on Saturday.

Captain Victor Matfield's team was beaten by the Cheetahs in the 2005 final at the same venue.

"It's time to set the record straight. We have not won the coveted Absa Currie Cup silverware for a long time and that alone is motivation for the boys to prove that Gauteng is home of champions," he said.

"However, nothing is easy when you challenge a team of the Cheetahs' calibre. Two weeks back they surprised all and sundry when they beat the Sharks in the semifinal in Durban."

Good news for the Bulls is that former IRB Player of the Year Bryan Habana was declared fit in time to play his last game for the side.

This game will afford the speedy winger a chance to bid the Bulls farewell in style by leading them to victory.

Coach Frans Ludeke named the same squad that eliminated Western Province in the Cape Town semifinal. He said Saturday's game would be a great contest. "The Cheetahs are a formidable team and their strong point is their never-say-die attitude. The scrums and breakdowns are going to be enormously important and we must not concede any turnovers."

Matfield, Bakkies Botha and Fourie du Preez will celebrate their 50th appearance for the Bulls. The Cheetahs are expected to announce their squad this afternoon. Jongi Nokwe is one of their key players.

The Bulls team: Zane Kirchner, Francois Hougaard, Jaco Pretorius, Wynand Olivier, Habana; Morne Steyn, Fourie du Preez, Pierre Spies, Dewald Potgieter, Deon Stegmann, Matfield (captain), Bakkies Botha, Werner Kruger, Derick Kuun, Gurthro Steenkamp.

Reserves: Bandise Maku, Rossouw de Klerk, Danie Rossouw, Pedrie Wannenburg, Heini Adams, Burton Francis, Gerhard van den Heever.
