Stress seems to have taken its toll on the head of the Limpopo department of health and social development, Jabu Dlamini, after she allegedly collapsed on duty on Monday.
Dlamini collapsed at around 4.30pm after being grilled by the Standing Committee on Public Accounts on the disappearance of 80 ambulances.
She was rushed to an undisclosed hospital.
The incident was, however, kept under wraps as senior officials felt it would embarrass the institution.
Dlamini had been under severe pressure from both MEC Merriam Segabutla and Scopa.
While Segabutla had allegedly been chastising Dlamini for failing to execute her duties in a satisfactory manner, Scopa wanted both of them to find the 80 ambulances that went missing a few months ago.
Scopa has given both Dlamini and Segabutla until November 16 to provide answers regarding the disappearance of the ambulances.
A source close to Sowetan revealed yesterday that Dlamini was alone when she collapsed in her office.
Paramedics from ER24 were called in. They were reportedly ordered to "clear the scene" before whisking her away.
Efforts by Sowetan to trace her whereabouts proved fruitless as no one was prepared to divulge anything about the incident.
But another source close to the department said Dlamini was not the first official to have collapsed at work.
Segabutla is said to have collapsed twice while at work since she was appointed MEC in May.
The first incident happened in August and she was found by her official driver who then rushed her to hospital.
She spent two days in hospital and was later discharged after recuperating.
The second incident happened last month when she allegedly discovered that some of her close friends were responsible for awarding themselves lucrative tenders in the department.
She was treated and discharged at a hospital in Polokwane.
"It seems the practice of collapsing in the department of health and social development is gradually becoming a norm," said the source.
"It's either the two are given time to rest in order to relieve themselves from stress or they must be given other responsibilities. "
Despite the incident being known throughout the department, spokesperson Selby Makgotho denied the story.
