Oil tank goes up in flames

A FIRE-FIGHTING unit was still monitoring the Mbongontwini area near Amanzimtoti yesterday morning after an oil tank exploded at a chemical plant on Sunday, KwaZulu-Natal metro police said.

A FIRE-FIGHTING unit was still monitoring the Mbongontwini area near Amanzimtoti yesterday morning after an oil tank exploded at a chemical plant on Sunday, KwaZulu-Natal metro police said.

"Firefighters are still on the scene, ensuring that no fires occur. They managed to stop the fire. It is still unknown what could have caused the blast," Senior Superintendent Joyce Khuzwayo said.

"They are also looking for clues to establish of what could have caused the fire," she said.

Four men were injured when the 23000-litre oil tank exploded at the SATI Chemicals plant in Beechgate Road, sending plumes of thick black smoke into the air.

Three of the injured were treated at the Netcare Kingsway for severe smoke inhalation. One man's face and legs were burnt and he was admitted for treatment. - Sapa
