A PIETERMARITZBURG youth made a gruesome discovery when he found the naked body of his mother lying in a pool of blood in her home in Edendale.
The killing, the motive for which the police say appears to be robbery, happened on Saturday night when three men wearing balaclavas forced their way into the woman's home at about 10pm.
The deceased, Fikile Phyllis Mnikathi, 51, had been asleep when the men, armed with handguns and iron pipes, entered the house.
They first assaulted her brother in a nearby room and tied his hands and legs before going to the woman's bedroom.
Police spokesman Joey Jeevan said when the police arrived on the scene yesterday morning they found the woman naked with her hands tied behind her back. Her 48-year-old brother was also found tied up.
It is believed that she had been assaulted to death and had an open wound to the head.
Jeevan said they could not rule out the possibility that the woman had also been raped, given that she was found naked. A postmortem would be conducted.
