THE Emirates Airline Champion Stakes at Newmarket in the UK last Saturday produced a turnover of R11,25million in Hong Kong.
It was the first time the 2000m Group 1 showpiece, won by the Henry Cecil-trained Twice Over, had been shown live, and bet on, in Hong Kong. The coverage was brokered by Phumelela Gold Enterprises (PGE), which is responsible for international distribution of the global betting-related broadcast rights of the 30 Racing UK racecourses.
Riaan du Plessis, chief executive of PGE, said: "We were very pleasantly surprised by the turnover achieved in Hong Kong. This confirms the popularity of UK racing in the East."
Richard Fitzgerald, chief executive of Racing UK, commented: "The broadcast was well received by the Hong Kong Jockey Club and everything went smoothly. The turnover in Hong Kong is really encouraging, which shows the enthusiasm Hong Kong racing fans hold for British racing, and hopefully this is a relationship that will really flourish," he added.
