"She handed me the knife moments before I stabbed him. She had been carrying the knife in her handbag daily, ever since she started plotting his death," Nehemia Radifale Sithole said yesterday.
"We succeeded on the third attempt. We had tried twice previously and failed," he said.
Sithole was testifying in the murder trial of his former lover Dikeledi Kimbie and alleged hitman Kgauta Ndaba. They are accused of murdering Dikeledi's husband Zongezile Kimbie in March 2006.
Sithole said: "Dikeledi and I were lovers in 1985. We met again in 2005 and revived our relationship. She told me that she was married but her husband was abusive.
"We then resumed a sexual relationship and at times she would sleep over at my house," said Sithole.
He claimed Kimbie told him that her husband did not give her money or sleep at home. Sithole claimed that Kimbie suggested that they should live together permanently.
"She said we should kill Kimbie and she provided me with a knife. On March 2 2006 she called me from home and ordered me to hide in her yard and wait for Kimbie to arrive. On that night Dikeledi ordered her children to go to bed early.
"I waited for him near the kitchen door, pulled out the knife and stabbed him multiple times on his body and fled the scene," he said.
Sithole said after Kimbie's burial, their relationship continued and that Dikeledi had even introduced him to her children.
Sithole pleaded guilty to Kimbie's murder and was sentenced to life imprisonment earlier this year.
Kimbie and Ndaba have both pleaded not guilty.
Before cross-examining Sithole, Kimbie's lawyer Advocate Sipho Mkalipe said: "After consulting with the accused, a conflict of interest developed between us.
"I am not going to continue representing her. The Legal Aid Board has assured me that they would send another counsel to represent her."
The trial resumes tomorrow.
