LAUSANNE - Adrian Mutu won the latest stage of his long court battle with former club Chelsea, which he owes more than ß17 million (R186,8million) after being fired for using cocaine.

The Swiss Federal Court yesterday said the Romanian forward should not pay anything until it rules on his appeal against the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which said he must pay Chelsea compensation.

The verdict is expected later this year.

CAS ruled in July that Fifa was right to award Chelsea compensation because Mutu breached his contract in 2004.

Chelsea fired Mutu for failing a drugs test, then got nothing when he served a seven-month ban and rebuilt his career in Italy.

Mutu joined Juventus as a free agent then was sold after one season for ß8 million to Serie A rivals Fiorentina, where he is thriving. - Sapa-AP
