Karatekas to invade Phokeng

THE Phokeng civic centre will play host to about 2000 karatekas who will take part in an international tournament from today.

THE Phokeng civic centre will play host to about 2000 karatekas who will take part in an international tournament from today.

The South African and Japan Karate Association tournament will host participants from the country's nine provinces, as well as competitors from Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Botswana and Lesotho.

Royal Bafokeng Sports development director Ezzy Seabelo said his association decided to host the event to allow the province's karatekas to test their skills against the others.

"Our entire team of 150 candidates will participate at no cost. Our aim in hosting the championship is to strengthen our relationship with the other karate federations," Seabelo said.

Some of the elite karatekas who will be taking part are Eric Mmonye, Johan le Grange and Lerato Puswe.

The event-filled three days will include a pre-grading course and a black belt grading and championship.
