MANY new vehicles share a lot of similarities in design. The new Subaru Legacy is no exception.
Launched in the Free State last week, the Subaru Legacy could be mistaken for a number of vehicles you have already seen on the roads, including the Lexus IS250.
That need not be a bad thing though, depending on how a manufacturer highlights its identity. The Legacy has a strong Subaru identity.
As we drove from the manufacturer's head office in Isando to Parys, Free State, the Legacy demonstrated a lot of strong elements.
With four people in the car, the unusual launch set-up was well orchestrated by the Subaru team.
They wanted us to experience the Legacy from the front to the back.
First, as a back seat passenger to Parys, I noticed the legroom that even my colleague Bruce Fraser would appreciate.
The enormous boot space is not the only impressive thing at the back. Even the ride quality was in the class of large saloons.
You could not have asked for a massage function found in the likes of Mercedes-Benz S-class.
After a good lunch and great company, we headed back to Gauteng. It was my turn to drive.
The vehicle's interior layout is beautifully done but what came from the engine was not what the Subaru is famous for.
The Subaru brand is famous for fast and furious engines in every four wheels they create.
Key design objectives were to offer more space, increased comfort, improved fuel efficiency and a comprehensive list of features. The newcomer provides all of that and also boasts a number of significant technical advances.
"The Legacy remains a key weapon in our arsenal and in many ways it showcases what the Subaru brand is all about as the first decade of the 21st century draws to a close," said Grant Bowring, Subaru Southern Africa's brand and marketing manager.
Safety features include seven airbags (including a driver's knee-bag - a first for Subaru), ABS with EBD, BAS, Vehicle Dynamics Control and Hill Start Assist.
The Legacy was launched in three models, the 2,0-litre manual transmission, the CVT (Auto) version and the flagship 2,5i Leneatronic.
Alongside the Legacy was the new Subaru Outback. I won't dwell on the Outback except to say it looks good.
