Paraguay choose Mossel Bay as their base camp for 2010

PARAGUAY, one of the South American soccer giants, have chosen Mossel Bay in Western Cape to be their home away from home for the duration of the 2010 World Cup.

PARAGUAY, one of the South American soccer giants, have chosen Mossel Bay in Western Cape to be their home away from home for the duration of the 2010 World Cup.

A delegation from Paraguay is in the country for a series of meetings with various stakeholders, including the Local Organising Committee (LOC).

Led by Hector Lacognata Zaragoza, Paraguay's minister of foreign affairs, the delegation will conduct their final preparations for the World Cup in Mossel Bay after declaring themselves happy with the facilities.

Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Argentina have already qualified for the World Cup after doing well during the qualifying rounds.

"Paraguay is a welcome addition to the Cup and performed extremely well during their qualification campaign," said LOC chief executive Danny Jordaan.

Zaragoza, who visited Safa House yesterday, said Paraguayans would be following their team religiously during next year's tournament.

"Of the millions of people who watch the tournament next year six million of them will be in Paraguay. Everything in Paraguay stops when the national team is playing. Football is very important to the people and is played in every corner of the country."

He said he had come to South Africa with strict instructions from Paraguayan president Fernando Armindo Lugo Mendez. Led by their deadly striker Roque Santa Cruz, Paraguay are ranked 23rd by Fifa and will make their eighth appearance at the finals.
