MANDOZA OFF THE HOOK

THE Roodepoort magistrate's court yesterday cancelled the warrant of arrest it had issued against popular kwaito star Mandoza.

Mandoza - real name Mduduzi Tshabalala - appeared briefly in the court to explain why he missed his September payment to the families of two men who died during an accident involving his car.

The star produced proof that he had paid the arrears on his September payment. The warrant for his arrest was then cancelled.

Mandoza had allegedly missed his September 7 deadline and this had resulted in the court issuing a warrant of arrest two weeks later.

Last December Mandoza pleaded guilty to two counts of culpable homicide after his car smashed into the back of a VW Jetta, leaving Charles Shabalala and Felix Thebe dead. The Roodepoort magistrate's court sentenced him to four years, suspended for five years on condition he paid R10000 towards the funeral costs of each of the bereaved families by January 7 2009.

He also had to make monthly payments of R1500 to the Thebe family and R3000 to the Shabalala family for 24 months.

Last week Honeydew police told Sowetan they were looking for Mandoza after he had not complied with his sentence. Mandoza did not answer his phone when Sowetan called for comment, while his lawyer responded with "no comment".
