Electrician sentenced

A GERMISTON electrician who accidentally shot dead his mistress three years ago was yesterday sentenced to correctional supervision.

A GERMISTON electrician who accidentally shot dead his mistress three years ago was yesterday sentenced to correctional supervision.

Passing sentence in the Pretoria high court Judge Sisi Khampepe said there was no evidence that Barry Griesel acted deliberately.

Griesel will serve three years correctional supervision on a charge of culpable homicide.

His mistress Amina Taliwe died after being shot at her Daveyton, East Rand, home in March 2006.

According to evidence before the court Taliwe felt aggrieved because Griesel's divorce from his wife was dragging on.

When Griesel went to visit her at her shack as usual that night an argument ensued and Taliwe grabbed Griesel's antique pistol, which he had left on her bedside table.

He tried to take the firearm from her, but a shot went off hitting her in the head. She died in hospital about a week later.

Her family also accepted that her death was accidental and that Griesel had not shot her on purpose. - Sapa
