THE body of an 18-year-old Pietermaritzburg pupil who drowned on Saturday on Durban's beach front has been found.
A police search team recovered the body at Umhlanga beach on Monday afternoon and took it to the Phoenix mortuary.
Nkosinathi Khumalo of the Longside Combined School and his classmates went for a swim early on Saturday morning.
The grade 12 pupils were still celebrating after their matric dance, which had taken place the night before.
"After the body was recovered we notified his teachers. They then passed on the message to his family," said SAPS Captain Khephu Ndlovu.
"A postmortem has been conducted and his family was asked to identify their son's body."
Ndlovu said an inquest docket had been opened.
Julia Khumalo told Sowetan her family was devastated by what had happened.
"My husband and sister are the ones that identified my son's body," she said.
"He will be laid to rest on Saturday at his home in Mafakatini near Empophomeni."
