HIS achievements at the IAAF World Athletics Championship in Germany were clouded by the gender row over Caster Semenya, but Mbulaeni Mulaudzi represented the country well and brought home a gold medal.

He is currently the world 800m champion and is the first South African athlete to be ranked number one in the world.

Sowetan spoke to this shy Limpopo native to find out what he's really like away from the track, and to get his take on some topical issues.

Q: Who is the first person on your phone contacts list?

A: I'm not really sure.

Q: What is the most you have ever spent on airtime?

A: I think it was about R3500. There was an emergency and I had to call a lot of people.

Q: Which car do you drive?

A: I drive a BMW 3-Series.

Q: What is your dream car?

A: My dream car is an Aston Martin.

Q: Do you have any outstanding traffic fines?

A: I do, but it can't be much because I recently paid some of them off. I reckon they are not more than R1000.

Q: Who is your favourite actor and what is your favourite movie?

A: My favourite actor is Nicolas Cage and I can't single out one movie because I like all of them.

Q: Who do you regard as the greatest athlete of all time?

A: Frankie Fredericks from Namibia. He was brilliant.

Q: Which famous South Africans would you take a long drive with?

A: Khotso Mokoena. He is just a fun guy to be around.

Q: How would you solve crime if you were president?

A: I would put more police officers on the streets because their mere presence would put criminals off.

Q: Do you agree with Bheki Cele's "shoot to kill" statements?

A: I suppose I understand where he's coming from and I don't want to say he is right or wrong, I guess it would depend on the situation the police find themselves in.

Q: Who is the greatest musician the world has ever seen?

A: Michael Jackson. He was one of a kind and my favourite song of his is Earth Song.

Q: Which record label's music do you prefer more - Kalawa Jazzmee or 999?

A: Kalawa Jazzmee. They have made some great music over the years.

Q: What do you know about global warming?

A: To tell you the truth, I don't know much.

Q: What is the best place you have ever visited:

A: It has to be Monaco in France.

Q: Do you remember where you were on September 11 2001?

A: I was attending Vaal Technikon, studying sports management and everywhere I went everyone was talking about the terror attack in the United States.

Q: Would you use your celebrity status to get out of trouble?

A: No I would not. For example, I have been stopped by traffic cops on a few occasions and at no point did I ever try to use my status to avoid punishment.

Q: You say your favourite music genre is hip-hop. Who then is your favourite rapper between Nas and Jay-Z?

A: Nas.
