THE ANC in Gauteng has vowed to introduce extraordinary measures to regulate the contestation of leadership positions in the party to avoid divisions caused by the succession debate.

Gauteng provincial secretary David Makhura said the party wanted to regulate the way members lobby for the support for their preferred candidates.

After a meeting of the provincial executive committee, Makhura said the ANC was worried about the use of money to coerce members to endorse candidates.

ANC regions have been torn apart by a succession debate that has pitted current provincial chairperson Paul Mashatile against his deputy and Gauteng premier Nomvula Mokonyane.

Makhura said candidates would not be allowed to use structures outside of the ANC - including driving propaganda through the media.

Meanwhile, the ANC has also blamed the SA Communist Party of orchestrating service delivery protests in the province.

Makhura accused the SACP of being behind the recent protests in Diepsloot.
