EIGHT people were arrested yesterday in Nelspruit after blockading the street leading to the 2010 Soccer World Cup venue, apparently to prevent workers from entering Mbombela Stadium.

The protesters were trying to force the authorities to build two schools that were demolished to make way for the stadium.

This brings to 54 the number of people, mostly pupils, who have been arrested since the protests started last week.

About two years ago, the government demolished Cyril Clerk and John Mdluli schools in Nelspruit, where the stadium has been built. Pupils were relocated to makeshift classrooms.
