THE community of eNdumeni in KwaZulu-Natal is breathing a sigh of relief after former mayor and ANC member Thandeka Nukani, her boyfriend Bongani Shangase and driver Peter Khumalo were denied bail by the Utrecht magistrate's court.

"We are excited that the court ruled against them," said a resident who declined to be named. "We are against their getting bail.

"They have terrorised citizens for too long and we hope when the trial resumes they will be locked away for a long time."

Nukani - who lost her mayoral position after two councillors crossed to the IFP - and the two men are facing an attempted murder charge after their arrest last month for allegedly bribing an inmate to kill Nukani's nephew, Siyabonga Nukani.

The case was adjourned to November 12 when all three accused will be informed about the trial date.

Nukani will appear in the Ladysmith high court on October 22 for Bujram's murder, while Shangase is also expected to appear in court today for killing IFP eNdumeni councillor Peter Nxele.
