Ngwenya surprise call for cosafa

MAMELODI Sundowns dribbling wizard and crowd favourite Manqoba "Shakes" Ngwenya is a surprise inclusion in the Amabinneplaas team of mainly inactive players preparing for the Cosafa Senior Challenge in Zimbabwe.

MAMELODI Sundowns dribbling wizard and crowd favourite Manqoba "Shakes" Ngwenya is a surprise inclusion in the Amabinneplaas team of mainly inactive players preparing for the Cosafa Senior Challenge in Zimbabwe.

Despite kicking his heels at Chloorkop, where coach Hristo Stoichkov told him he does not feature in his plans, Ngwenya is in Windhoek with the national "development side" for tomorrow's friendly against Namibia.

Amabinneplaas, coached by Khabo Zondo and Simon Ngomane, will use the game as part of their preparations for the Cosafa Senior Cup in Zimbabwe next week.

It is the defending champions' only warm-up match.

Other Amabinneplaas players who are not featuring for their respective clubs include Thuso Phala (Sundowns), Jacob Mokhasi (SuperSport United), Joseph Makhanya (Orlando Pirates), Eric Matholo (Bloemfontein Celtic) and George Lebese (Kaizer Chiefs).

Zondo, who left with Amabinneplaas for Windhoek on Friday, said they were ready for the tournament in Zimbabwe, which will also feature Lesotho and Tanzania.

"We are using the friendly against Namibia to assess the team ahead of the tournament in Zimbabwe, it will also give us a chance to do necessary adjustments.

"Our first game is against Angola. It will be a tough one as they are also preparing for the Africa Cup of Nations in Luanda in January.

"At this stage, we do not know which team they will select for the tournament in Zimbabwe but we are organising DVDs of their recent games," said Zondo.

The team in Windhoek is:

Goalkeepers - Jacob Mokhasi, Buti Khoza (Jomo Cosmos);

Defenders - Warren Bishop (AmaZulu), Eric Matholo, Gladwin Shitolo (Cosmos), Keamohetse Wolff (no club), Sakhile Mhlangu (no club), Wayne Matle (Kaizer Chiefs);

Midfielders - Bafo Biyela (AmaZulu), Mduduzi Nyanga, Joseph Makhanya, Oupa Manyisa (all from Pirates), Bongani Theletsane (Cosmos), Thuso Phala, Bongani Thwala (all Sundowns), George Lebese;

Strikers - Zakhele Nene (no club), Rudzani Ramudzuli (SuperSport United), Lennox Bacela (Santos) and Ngwenya.
