mandoza still at large, say police

KWAITO star Mandoza is still at large after receiving information that the police wanted to arrest him for failing to comply with a court order.

KWAITO star Mandoza is still at large after receiving information that the police wanted to arrest him for failing to comply with a court order.

Honeydew police spokesperson Captain Lydia Mtila-Dikolomela said a warrant of arrest was issued by the court after Mandoza - real name Mduduzi Tshabalala - failed to comply with his culpable homicide sentence.

He pleaded guilty to two counts of culpable homicide after his car smashed into the rear of a VW Jetta, leaving Charles Shabalala and Felix Thebe dead.

The Randburg magistrate's court imposed a four-year sentence, that was suspended for five years on condition Mandoza paid R10000 towards the funeral costs of each bereaved family by January 7.

He would also have to make monthly payments of R1500 to the Thebe family and R3000 to the Shabalala family for 24 months.

By the end of the period he would have paid R108000 to the two families.

Now the struggling singer, of Nkalakatha fame, is said to be defaulting on the monthly payments.

Sowetan tried to contact the singer yesterday but his cellphone was instead answered by his wife Mpho.

She said the singer was not facing arrest because "his lawyers made payment arrangements with the police last week".

But Mtila-Dikolomela dismissed Mpho's claims as lies.

"I just spoke to the investigating officer and he tells me that no payment arrangements have been made.

"I can confirm that I also have a copy of that warrant and that we are still looking to arrest him. He knows that he was supposed to hand himself over but his cellphone is being answered by a female," said Mtila-Dikolomela.

Mpho went on: "Mandoza is not at large. The police have not gone to his work place or home address, so how can they say he is at large?

"You should have asked those police officers what they mean because he has not skipped the country."
