Light of liberty

WE HAVE a lot to celebrate on this Media Freedom Day.

WE HAVE a lot to celebrate on this Media Freedom Day.

Despite a few occasions of concern, we are convinced that we have nothing to fear regarding the constitutionally entrenched right to freedom of expression.

Unlike our forebears 32 years ago we operate in a world where we have no doubt that another edition of this paper will be on the streets tomorrow.

We live in a world where silly, fringe and delusional parties such as the AWB have nothing to fear but someone casting some light into their troubled souls.

As we remember that Wednesday when the powers that be banned our predecessor, The World, and 19 Black Consciousness-aligned organisations, we remind ourselves that the price of freedom is eternal vigilance.

Defending these freedoms should they get under threat is the greatest tribute we can pay to the men and women who fought so hard for them.
