THE memorial service for three soccer players who died in a car accident had to be stopped for a few minutes when the team's captain cried uncontrollably

Temba Mathebula, one of the accident survivors and captain of the Burgersdorp Shinning Stars, could not control himself as he tried to come to terms with the loss of his friends and teammates.

Safa members from Mopani and Tzaneen had to whisk him outside the Assemblies of God Church.

The accident happened between Burgersdorp and Mafarane village outside Tzaneen last weekend.

Dennies Mashele, the driver of the bakkie transporting the players, tried to overtake another car. He lost control, resulting in the death of the players.

The traumatised Mathebula said he felt empty without his friends." I don't know what I will be without them."

The victims Mashele, 50, Siphiwe Shamango, 21, Msilo Shiphelana, 19, Erick Nonkie Maluleke, 30 and a toddler who was travelling with them, Tebogo Ramoshaba, 7, died on the scene, while 22 others were admitted in Sekororo, Letaba and Dr CN Phatudi hospitals .
