Alarm at food crisis

AFRICAN Monitor's Archbishop Njongonkulu Ndungane has expressed dismay at the burden of the food crisis in Africa.

AFRICAN Monitor's Archbishop Njongonkulu Ndungane has expressed dismay at the burden of the food crisis in Africa.

"It is not only morally unacceptable but a crime against humanity to allow people to go to bed hungry every day," Ndungane said yesterday.

He said Africa faced a "double burden" of obesity caused by unhealthy lifestyles and hunger in underprivileged communities.

Today marks World Food Day and the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, a day to advocate access to food as a basic human right. - Namhla Tshisela
