THE newly established National Youth Development Agency says the South African economy can only flourish if the youth is capacitated in various skills development programmes.

This was the highlight of the business opportunity support service partnership between the NYDA and the South African Local Government Association, held in Polokwane in Limpopo yesterday.

The NYDA was set up in June by President Jacob Zuma after the merger of the now-defunct National Youth Commission and Umsobomvu Youth Fund.

It is aimed at creating and promoting coordination of youth development.

The NYDA has unveiled a strategic plan in a calculated bid to empower the youth through various skills development plans.

The agency's national chairperson, Andile Lungisa, said as the custodians of youth development their mandate was to advance youth development.

He said the agency planned to set up a national youth bank; a national youth radio station and work closely with the SABC to launch a TV youth programme to help empower the youth.
