RUTH Funi Silinda, the former wife of Mpumalanga Premier David Mabuza, is suing Sowetan for over R500million following a series of articles allegedly accusing her of being involved in corruption.
Silinda is suing Sowetan for a cool R510million in damages. In her summons Silinda alleges that the articles published implicated that the multi-million rand contracts she got from the provincial government were awarded to her merely because she had a romantic relationship with Mabuza.
In July this year, Sowetan published an article headlined "Premier ignores R210m inquest". The story highlighted how the former head of the province's public works department Priscilla Nkwinika was promoted to the premier's office despite a recommendation by the integrity management unit that she be criminally charged after she irregularly awarded tenders to Silinda's two companies, among others.
But Silinda alleges that the stories were defamatory.
"Because of this defamation, Silinda and her company have each been damaged in their respective reputation and dignity," said Silinda's attorney, Mfinci Bahlmann.
