Police officer nabbed over 'bribe'

LIMPOPO police have arrested a 34-year-old police officer in Northam near Thabazimbi on charges of fraud and defeating the ends of justice.

LIMPOPO police have arrested a 34-year-old police officer in Northam near Thabazimbi on charges of fraud and defeating the ends of justice.

The cop was arrested at the weekend after he allegedly accepted a bribe from a woman he threatened to rearrest for cases she was involved in lat year.

Police spokesman Superintendent Mohale Ramatseba said the officer allegedly went to the home of the woman who had been arrested for dealing in dagga and possession of an unlicensed firearm last year.

He demanded a R3500 bribe under threat that he would reopen the case.

According to Ramatseba the case against the woman was withdrawn last year due to a lack of evidence.

He said the officer was the one who had investigated the case.

He was arrested after the woman paid the bribe and informed the police.

"We are disturbed by police who involve themselves in criminal activities while communities count on them for protection," Ramatseba said.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Northam magistrate's court today.

Ramatseba encouraged people in the province to take a leaf from the woman and expose people, especially police officers, who get involved in criminal activities.
