Maseru border post declared unfit for World Cup

THE Tourism and Home Affairs portfolio committees have declared the Maseru border post not ready for the 2010 World Cup.

The committee visited ports of entry - Beitbridge, Maseru Bridge, Ficksburg, Fouriesburg and OR Tambo International Airport and concluded on Friday that Maseru Bridge had serious problems.

Parliamentary spokesperson Mava Lukani said: "Although all of them face difficulties, the committee found that problems at Maseru Bridge were serious and the border post was not ready for next year's soccer World Cup.

"Some of the problems discovered at Maseru Bridge were poor management, lack of proper equipment and staff shortages," Lukani said.

He said the committee discovered that the border post had only four police officers instead of the required 20 per shift.

"This obviously compromises security as it leads to inadequate searching of vehicles and pedestrians. There are also no scanners and sniffer dogs."

Lukani was not aware of plans in place to remedy the situation.

He said that despite the fact that OR Tambo International still experienced problems of fraud and corruption, the committee was satisfied with the measures in place at the airport to eradicate and uproot fraud and corruption.

"These measures include the training of airline liaison officers who are going to be posted at the international airports."
