JOMO Sono, Clive Barker and Gavin Hunt will not interfere with Bafana Bafana coach Joel Santana but will instead assess the performance of the team.
Sono yesterday clarified the role of the three coaches who have been roped into the Bafana technical team. "Clive, Gavin and myself will do our job while Santana will carry on with his. Ours is simple and that is to assess the Bafana Bafana performance during match days," Sono said.
His inclusion in the three-man task team has been questioned by those who judge him by his club Jomo Cosmos's position on the PSL table.
Cosmos are languishing at the bottom of the standings, but Sono says it would be foolhardy for people to judge him by that.
"Judge me by what I can contribute," said the coach who played a pivotal role in the 1996 Bafana team that won the Africa Cup of Nations.
Barker was head coach while Sono was his technical adviser.
Barker vacated the hot seat after pressure from Safa after Bafana Bafana's poor showing at the 1997 Confederations Cup in Saudi Arabia. Sono was appointed at the 11th hour before Bafana Bafana left for Burkina Faso for the 1998 Afcon, where Benni McCarthy, who had been ignored by Barker, became an overnight sensation.
For those with a short memory, most of the 1996 Afcon champions went through Sono's mentorship at club level.
Santana does not regard the appointment of the task team as a well-calculated move to fire him. Instead, he has gladly welcomed the three musketeers, who were appointed by the new Safa leadership as part of their attempt to get Bafana Bafana back on track in their preparations for the 2010 World Cup.
Santana, whose future is hanging in the balance, told a media briefing in Oslo yesterday: "People have been saying I do not engage Premiership coaches. Now with this arrangement, we will have more coaches to speak to about Bafana Bafana."
"I had a meeting with (Safa) vice president (Mwelo) Nonkonyana here in Norway. He explained that the coaches are coming to help, so I am not worried".
Raymond Hack, Safa CEO, said: "They don't interact with the coach, they will prepare an independent report and hand it over to Safa's executive committee."
