WHILE her comedian son makes people laugh, Patricia Nombuyiselo Noah stands accused by several inner-city residents of reducing them to tears.
Noah, the mother of popular TV personality Trevor Noah, has been accused by Hillbrow and Berea body corporates and the Johannesburg Inner City Residents Forum of using hijack tactics to take over buildings and then failing to properly maintain them.
Noah has dismissed the claims, saying people should go to the police if they believe she was doing anything illegal.
"Everything I do is through court orders, so how can it be criminal?"
She said she was involved with 17 buildings in the inner- city.
"I'm an investor and I want to bring back law and order to the city," she said.
Her son told Sowetan: "It's not the first time this has come up. I do not get involved in these matters because my mother doesn't want me to."
But a resident in one of her buildings said: "I still don't know how Noah took over our body corporate.
"All I know is that she got a couple of trustees to sign her as managing agent and we found out later that she was now the boss of the building," said Mduduzi Thabede, a resident of Sedgefield building.
Sowetan has the case numbers of several complaints against her at the Hillbrow police station.
Organiser of the Johannesburg Inner City Residents Forum Sylvester Maepa said "The police refer complainants to the housing tribunal but that is a toothless dog
"The tribunal will tell you that their processes depend on the cooperation of the building administrator or the alleged hijackers,"
lNoah said that she could not maintain buildings if their residents failed to pay rent.
lNoah owns a company, PN Noah Estates, that is not certified and is therefore, according to a clerk at the Estate Agency Affairs Board, not legally permitted to operate.
