TRAFFIC in the busy Durban CBD came to a grinding halt after a collision involving an out-of-control taxi and a light motor vehicle.

The incident forced the closure yesterday of Grey and Pine streets to motorists leaving Durban.

ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks said two pedestrians and several commuters from the taxi were injured in the collision.

"ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene to find a pedestrian lying on the pavement next to the road and another lying in the middle of the intersection.

"The taxi and light motor vehicle were just a few metres from the second pedestrian," Banks said.

He said the first pedestrian, an elderly woman, was treated for chest and arm injuries.

"She was stabilised on the scene and taken to a nearby hospital," Banks said. "The second pedestrian, a male in his early 30s, had suffered severe head and back injuries and was in a serious condition.

"Seven other commuters were treated for minor to moderate injuries and taken to hospital ."
