Elias Mundopa says he wanted brake pads replaced on his Toyota Land Cruiser Prado. He left his car on the vehicle ramp on the morning of August 25 but when he came to collect it at around 4pm, it was missing.
"The manager made it look like a joke and kept saying my vehicle was nowhere to be seen," Mundopa says.
The manager referred him to the person who had booked in his vehicle.
"He was the only person who looked very disturbed. He telephoned the police," Mundopa says.
No one could explain how his vehicle went missing but many were quick to say that they were not negligent.
Mundopa says Speedy' s insurance had repudiated his claim because there was no forced entry, the vehicle was parked in the open and the keys were not stolen.
"Write about my plight to warn other people," he says.
Desiree Dwyer of Speedy says they do everything possible to ensure that vehicles left in their care are protected.
"Unfortunately, at first, we did not realise that the vehicle had been stolen. We assumed it had been moved to a more convenient space because we have vehicles driving in and out all day."
She says they had a strict rule of locking customers' car keys in a safe.
"Customers' keys are locked in a safe. Employees are not allowed to leave the premises with customers' keys or to leave them lying around. The complex also has full-time security guards," she says.
She said Speedy tried to claim from their own insurance company, Santam, but the claim was declined.
"It is a sad fact of life that car thieves are professionals. The theft probably occurred in a matter of moments," Dwyer says.
She said they would help Mundopa to claim from his own insurance.
"We will give him every possible assistance to claim from his insurance. We hope the matter is resolved satisfactorily," she says.
