Water shortage derails rural project

A SELF-HELP project introduced by President Jacob Zuma recently at Muyexe village outside Giyani isfacing a serious water shortage.

The Limpopo project is regarded as a national pilot plan in ruraldevelopment.

The project started after Minister of Rural Development Gugile Nkwinti and his deputy, Joe Phaahla, with Limpopo Premier Cassel Mathale launched the national Comprehensive Rural Development Programme as a pilot project for the fist time in the country.

Various community projects in the village, which includes brick-making, a 10-hectare community garden, road construction and pit toilets, collapsed after two dams that supplied water in the Giyani area experienced a serious water shortage.

Thomas Maluleke, a worker at one of the projects, said with the current water problems there was a possibility that the projects would not bear fruit.

"If the government could sink more boreholes it would help the projects to proceed," Maluleke said yseterday.

The construction of a pipe to draw water from the Nandoni Dam near Thohoyandou to supply Giyani and surrounding areas is currently under way.

Eddie Mohoebi, rural development spokesperson, said they were aware of the challenges facing the Muyexe community.

He said they would soon solve the problem in conjunction with the Mopani district municipality.
