Robbers flee without the loot

ROBBERS in three vehicles forced a cash van to overturn in an attempted cash-in-transit heist and decided to flee without attempting to get the loot.

The failed attempted heist happened on R59 towards Vereeniging at about 6pm yesterday.

Police spokesperson Constable Thabo Mabuza said the robbers were travelling in a blue VW polo and two BMWs.

"The suspects allegedly forced the cash van off the road. The driver of the cash van lost control and it overturned," Mabuza said.

There were five occupants in the SBV vehicle during the alleged attempt and the vehicle was carrying an undisclosed amount of money.

"We don't know why the suspects did not got to the vehicle and remove the money," Mabuza said.

There was no shooting during the incident.

Mabuza said the driver sustained serious injuries and was still unconscious while his colleagues were hospitalised with serious injuries.

Last month, Police Commissioner Bheki Cele congratulated police officers on a job well done after they shot dead six would-be robbers in Kameeldrif, Pretoria. A police officer was wounded in the process .
