It is difficult to actually fathom how a person who took the Hippocratic oath could act in such a callous manner in the name of following protocol.
Dr Jan Vorie's explanation, that he refused to treat what was obviously an emergency case because he was following protocol, is no comfort to the child and her family.
The issue is further compounded by the fact that his actions have also exposed the child to the possibility of contracting HIV-Aids because she was not given any drugs to inhibit such a possibility.
It is this kind of attitude that really shows how some people have failed to embrace the spirit that our government is trying to instil to persuade those who are in positions of power that "people - especially the most vulnerable - must come first".
What is even more disturbing is the report by the police that this is generally the attitude of district surgeons in the area and that it has led to the state losing cases against alleged rapist.
The MEC for health must not leave any stone unturned to get to the bottom of this despicable behaviour.
And serious action must be taken against those found responsible because our communities need not continue to suffer their unhuman behaviour.
