SOUTH Africans, particularly University of Limpopo alumni, have an opportunity to assist struggling students through the 2009 Annual Benefit Gala Dinner.
Taking place at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, Gauteng, on November 6, the fundraiser coincides with the awarding of the Onkgopotse Tiro Excellence Awards and the official launch of the university's alumni.
The institute supports the university's Students Financial Aid Trust, which the students representative council set up in 1995-96 to provide financial assistance to underprivileged students.
So far, the trust has awarded bursaries to 310 students at a maximum of R10000 each. It has thus far allocated more than R2,9million to students.
The Onkgopotse Tiro Excellence Awards are awarded in recognition of outstanding achievers associated with the university and they carry a lot of prestige.
An unflinching black consciousness movement adherent, Tiro, was the SRC president in his final year. He delivered a speech that sharply criticised the Bantu Education Act of 1953 at the university's graduation ceremony in 1972.
