In fact, Safa should have heeded calls by Fifa to shelve the presidential elections until after the 2010 World Cup.
It goes without saying that people have put their own interests before those of the country.
PSL chairperson Irvin Khoza and his cohorts need to leave the newly elected Safa leadership alone and concentrate on organising a successful World Cup. Unless they do so the quality of a well-organised World Cup might be compromised.
After all, Khoza and LOC chief executive Danny Jordaan withdrew from the election and no one pushed them but the clause they should have known about long before they entered the Safa presidential race.
Had they heeded the call by Fifa to leave the election issue, it might have given them a chance because after the World Cup they would no longer be involved with LOC, which would have qualified them to contest the Safa election.
Contesting the decision taken on Saturday to elect Kirsten Nematandani as Safa president will only derail the World Cup preparations, which will expose not only South Africa but Africa as a whole.
After what we've been through trying to get this biggest of sporting event on our shores, this will present a very bad anticlimax.
For the sake of all Africans Khoza and his cronies should just let sleeping dogs lie.
