TENSION is mounting in the Blouberg municipality in the Senwabarwana area of Limpopo following the appointment of an acting municipal manager.

The appointment of Elias Mathobane as acting municipal manager to replace Ike Makhura - who was suspended after allegations of fraud and irregularities involving several millions were levelled against him - has left local councillors spitting fire. The DA and ACDP protested and threatened "to make the municipality ungovernable if Mathobane's appointment is not reversed".

Councillors who oppose Mathobane's appointment did not report for work on Monday and Tuesday claiming that he was not appointed by the council.

Solomon Maboya of the ACDP said any appointment of a section 57 manager - weather in an acting capacity or on a full time basis, should be made by council.

The DA's Victor Dankuru said: "Mathobane is not welcome in our municipality because the proper procedure was not followed. We need things to be done according to book."

Blouberg municipality mayor Serite Sekgoloane said Mathobane was appointed by the department of local government in consultation with the council.
