FINALLY the chickens are coming home to roost. It is not surprising that former president Thabo Mbeki has now conveniently criticised outgoing Reserve Bank governor Tito Mboweni.

As far as we know, Mboweni, Gill Marcus, Leonard Chuene, Irvin Khoza, Molefi Oliphant, Danny Jordan and others are part of the alleged ANC loyal cadre deployment strategy put in state institutions and sectors such as sports, religion, trade unions, non-profit organisations etc.

Not only was Mboweni appointed by the ANC, which Mbeki still belongs to, but he is a wellknown cadre. If he acted beyond his mandate or policy position , the Stellenbosch group led by Mbeki had an opportunity to recall him. It is an open secret that since 1994 the ruling party has battled to separate powers between state and party, so being accused of interference will not hold water.

The alleged failure by Mboweni to provide leadership to avert the financial crisis should be seen as an overall failure of the ANC's loyal cadre deployment strategy. When some people are parachuted into leadership merely on their association with the ruling elite or on the basis of membership and not expertise as alleged, both the Stellenbosch and Polokwane groups must accept full responsibility and stop blaming "reactionary forces" after 15 years in power.

This confirmsthe ANC and its alliance partners' failure to provide the country with leadership for 15 years and its lack of clarity on its ideological position or orientation.
