THE police in Lebowakgomo, Limpopo, have opened an inquest after an elderly woman allegedly died from food poisoning.
Lebowakgomo police spokesperson Inspector Manong Tshehla, said pensioner Mashale Mahlomotja, 90, allegedly complained of stomach pains and vomited profusely shortly after eating food prepared at a tombstone unveiling ceremony in Mamaolo village at the weekend.
Tshehla said Mahlomotja complained of stomach pains and started vomiting after allegedly having eaten the food. She died before she could be taken to hospital.
"Though police investigations are still in progress, the fact that the woman could have died from food poisoning cannot be ruled out," he said.
Tshehla warned people not to start pointing fingers at each other. He said they should wait for the police to complete their investigations.
He said a postmortem would be conducted this week to establish the actual cause of the pensioner's death.
Villagers who witnessed the incident condemned it. They said the police must reveal the cause of the woman's death otherwise people would start pointing fingers.
