Manhunt for car hijacker

NORTH West police have launched a manhunt for a 22-year-old man who allegedly abducted a woman before hijacking her car at gunpoint about a week ago.

Elmien du Preez, a student at North West University's Potchefstroom campus, was returning home after lectures last Thursday when the suspect allegedly asked her to give him lift to town.

The unemployed man, Jacques Swart, an alleged alcoholic who was also suspected of being hooked on drugs, allegedly ordered her at gunpoint to drop him off in the central business district.

Anita Smith, of the North West police, said when they arrived at the town centre Swart asked her to drive to a rubbish dump near Promosa.

He ordered Du Preez to get out of the car and then drove off in her vehicle.

Smith said that apart from speaking Afrikaans and English, Swart is very fluent in isiZulu and Swazi.

His family had moved from the Malelane area in Mpumalanga to North West recently.

She appealed to anyone who knows his whereabouts not to approach or try to apprehend him since he was armed.

Anyone with information should contact the commander of the Ikageng detective branch Superintendent JC Scholtz on 082-568-6264 or the investigating officer Detective-Constable Tlhagi Kubu on 073- 7357-453, or call the CrimeStop number 08600- 10111.
