Ex-mayor to face 2007 murder rap

FORMER Endumeni municipality mayor Thandeka Nukani has been charged with the 2007 murder of ANC councillor, trade unionist and SACommunist Party member Grishen Bujram.

Bujram, 43, was shot in his car on the night of June 15 2007 while with friends in the Lindelani in Sibongile township, Dundee.

Nukani, pictured, who was among the first people to pay condolences at Bujram's house, her boyfriend Bongani Shangase, 33, and nephew Siyabonga Nukani, 25, were initially arrested in connection with the murder but charges against her were later withdrawn. The two men were granted R5 000 bail each.

In December 2008 the two men were found guilty. Shangase was sentenced to life imprisonment for Bujram's murder and Siyabonga Nukani was jailed for 20 years as an accomplice. It was found he had driven Thandeka Nukani's car to the scene of the killing.

It is alleged that at the time of his murder Bujram was investigating the sale of 17 low-cost government houses by a municipal councillor for "anything between R700 and R3 000".

Bujram's widow Shirley said she was relieved that her husband's case was finally reaching "conclusion after two years of rumours".

Nukani, who serves on the ANC's Bambatha regional executive committee, will appear in the high court in Ladysmith on October 22.
