Accountant arrested over pension theft

A LIMPOPO municipality accountant has been arrested for diverting money into his account under the pretext that he was paying it into the government employee pension fund scheme.

Police said the accountant, who is attached to Thulamela municipality, was found during the investigation by the municipality and police to have transferred R371000 to his account.

Thohoyandou police spokesperson Captain Mashudu Malelo said the suspect was arrested after the municipality lodged a complaint that the accountant had been involved in fraudulent activities.

Nnyambeni Mufamadi, 38, was charged with corruption and fraud involving an unlawful transaction that saw his account getting money that belongs to the pension scheme.

"He was arrested for fraud and appeared in the Thohoyandou magistrate's court but he was remanded " Malelo said.

Sowetan learnt that the money belonged to officials who were transferred from the department of water affairs to the municipality.
