POLICE at Ritavi, outside Tzaneen in Limpopo, have opened a case of murder after a would-be robber died in hospital following an attack by an angry mob.

The mob allegedly attacked the man during an attempted robbery at Mokgolobotho village on Monday.

Police spokesperson Inspector Seth Magadzi said the incident happened after three men arrived at one of the cottages in the area at night while people were asleep.

The men allegedly knocked on the doors where the people were sleeping and when the occupants could not open, the men allegedly forced their way in using an axe.

Magadzi said the occupants screamed for help and a mob of community members arrived on the scene and severely beat one of the three men.
