MUSA Mdele, a 19-year-old teenager from Jabulani, Soweto, is on a mission to improve education facilities in South Africa.
The feisty youngster has secured R20000 funding from the Nedbank Foundation to build a comprehensive computer laboratory for his old school, Kholwani Primary in Soweto.
Mdele also secured a sponsorship of groceries from the Soweto Gospel Choir.
Due to the high rate of poverty in the community, many pupils rely on feeding schemes for a meal during school hours.
Mdele's project, called Billion Amount on your School Account, was derived from his idea that each individual's school education is worth a billion rand.
"When I finished primary school at Kholwani I wanted a better education for myself but I could not afford it," he said.
A bursary to attend St Stithians Boys College was awarded to him due to his passion and determination when he decided that he would go to all extremes to attend the school.
"I sent letters to the then Minister of Education Naledi Pandor and she referred me to the MEC. Through various connections I got in touch with the school scholarship board because I would not take no for an answer," Mdele said.
He matriculated from St Stithians last year, where he said he struggled to keep up with the quality of education that could not be compared to his primary school.
"I could have gotten distinctions in matric but I did not have a proper foundation.
"This is what sparked my passion that all children should have access to the kind of education offered only by private schools."
His dream for his 21st birthday is to produce a documentary featuring 21 prominent world leaders such as Nelson Mandela and Oprah Winfrey. He would then obtain donations from each celebrity featured to improve education facilities in South Africa.
Thuli Mbuli of Nedbank Foundation said through their involvement in projects such as Kholwani Primary School, the foundation had succeeded in making a difference in the lives of individuals and communities in South Africa.
Mdele has his eyes set on Harvard University, in the United State, where he intends to read economics.
