THE Independent Complaints Directorate in North West is investigating the death of a man at the hands of the police yesterday.

Sifiso Nzimande, 38, was wanted for the murder of inkosi Mbongeleni Zondi and conspiracy to assassinate national Police Commissioner Bheki Cele.

ICD spokesperson Grace Langa confirmed that they were investigating a case of alleged murder in connection with the shooting.

Langa said police were required by law to report to the ICD any death resulting from police actions.

"The information we have at this stage is that the deceased was shot six times. It was reported to us that the deceased was killed by Durban police and we are still awaiting statements from them."

Nzimande was cornered by the Durban organised crime unit in his hideout in Rustenburg yesterday.

Police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Kebaakae Metsi said Nzimande had opened fire on the police when he was ordered to open the door of the house in which he was hiding.
