The Griquas are now lying third on the log with 38 points, trailing log leaders Sharks by two points and second-placed Western Province by one point.
"I am just very proud of my troops for being so composed when the rampant Lions threw everything at them for almost the entire game.
"Instead of panicking they regrouped and fought back after trailing 12-15 at the break to emerge victorious."
The defending Vodacom Cup champions are left with three tricky games against the big unions to wrap up the season.
This include two away matches, against Western Province on Saturday and the Blue Bulls on October 3, and the last one against defending champions Sharks in Kimberley on October 10.
Flyhalf Naas Olivier continued with his immaculate goalkicking when he contributed 26 points to the Griquas.
A try apiece by Trompie Nontshinga, Olivier and Sarel Pretorius sealed the victory for the home side. The Lions' points came through Johan Jackson, Derek Minnie and Alwyn Hollenbach (all tries), Earl Rose (conversion), and Herkie Kruger (conversion and four penalties).
Meanwhile, Free State Cheetahs' unbeaten run came to a sudden halt on Saturday when they succumbed 13-24 to the Sharks.
In Boland, also on Saturday, the Blue Bulls romped to a 72-16 win over the Cavaliers while the Western Province trounced Leopards 37-3 at Potchefstroom on Friday.
