MOZAMBIQUE - The Nacala Development Corridor plans to invest $150million (about R1,1billion) to upgrade its port, rail and roads infrastructure over the next five years to raise capacity to 4million tons, an official said.

CDN executive director Agostinho Langa said Mozambique wants to become a regional trans-shipment route, serving as an alternative to the highly congested ports of Dar es Salam in Tanzania and Kenya's Mombassa.

The port, with a current capacity of 900000 tons, would be used to handle grain exports from the region. Malawi is the biggest user of the Nacala port for shipping its fertiliser, sugar, wheat, clinker and tobacco goods.

Langa said apart from exports and imports the port could also be used as a transshipment facility.- Reuters
