DURBAN is abuzz as it welcomes the Queen of Gospel, Rebecca Malope, to its shores.
Malope arrived in the coastal city yesterday and received a hero's welcome from eThekwini mayor Obed Mlaba.
Malope had tea with the mayor at city hall.
She is in town to celebrate her achievements in a concert dubbed the Ebenezer Celebration of a Living Legend, organised by the World Gospel PowerHouse, producers of the SABC Crown Gospel Music Awards, and office of the Premier.
MEC for arts and culture Weziwe Thusi will deliver a speech at the gala concert tonight.
MEC for social development Meshack Hadebe will also be among the high profile people in attendance.
The event will also be graced by Rebecca's friends and associates Sizwe Zako and Peter Tladi.
Gospel artists who will perform as a tribute to Malope include Hlengiwe Mhlaba, Sfiso Ncwane, and Ncandweni Christ Ambassadors.
Malope will wrap up the proceedings with a performance of her hits.
The founder and president of the World Gospel Powerhouse and the SABC Crown Gospel Music Awards, Zanele Mbokazi, said: "We are setting yet another trend to acknowledge and encourage our outstanding artists while they are alive.
"The awards committee has decided that whoever wins the lifetime achiever award will be celebrated the following year."
The concert takes place at the Durban Christian Centre, Jesus Dome, today from 6pm.
