WORLD-RENOWNED South African jazz pianist Abdullah Ibrahim will be home to celebrate his 75th birthday next month in true musical style.

WORLD-RENOWNED South African jazz pianist Abdullah Ibrahim will be home to celebrate his 75th birthday next month in true musical style.

Thousands of his fans are expected to attend his concert on October 9 at Wits University's Linder Auditorium.

Ibrahim, pictured , is currently based in Germany.

He will return with his band Ekaya in tow for a one-night-only concert.

Ekaya's line-up features Beldon Bullock (bass), George Gray (drums), both part of the Abdullah Ibrahim Trio. The group will be backed by Cleave Guyton (alto sax, flute), Keith Loftis, (tenor sax), Andrea Murchison (trombone) and Jason Marshall (baritone sax).

All are top jazz musicians based in New York.

Fresh and engaging arrangements of Ibrahim's formidable catalogue of music - including The Wedding and Mannenberg - received a rapturous response from the audience at the Wits Great Hall in May this year.

This time Ibrahim promises more of his uniquely mesmerising music.

"But of course it's not going to be the same as what we did before. You never know what's going to happen."
