Health depts told to cut frills

TREASURY officials say provincial health departments can save more than R2billion by cutting back on catered functions, high cellphone bills and travel.

The officials said yesterday that the departments were spending money on "frills" like unnecessary advertising and uncontrolled cellphone expenses by managers.

Health policy director Mark Bletcher said a huge amount of money was also being spent on consultants, while blood bank bills were not being paid.

Treasury warned the health departments to slash the frills and use the money for essential services.
